In 2012 John W. Gillan, D.D.S., M.S., received the Spirit of Service Lifetime Award from the American Association of Endodontists during its recent Annual Session in Boston.
Dr. Gillan has spent over 20 years traveling abroad on a volunteer basis to teach endodontics and provide care to those most in need. While working in a private practice for more than 30 years in Mesa, Arizona, Dr. Gillan has pursued a passion for helping the forgotten and underserved. Since 1994, he has traveled annually to teach endodontics with the Albanian Health Fund, a faith-based medical-dental team in post-Communist Tirana, Albania. He brings his own supplies, including books, to share with the professors, and treats patients; educating students to help improve Albania's dental care.
Since 2005, John has also participated with a medical-dental surgical team for faith-based Health Teams International working in Cameroon, Africa, to provide dental care to the remote village populations. Dr. Gillan has also participated in dental mission trips to Romania and Kosova. His dedication to service in the course of his professional career is truly inspiring and an example for all health care professionals to follow.
"I am proud of many things I accomplished as president of the AAE," said Dr. William T. Johnson. "I can now say that the highlight of the year is being able to present Dr. Gillan with this award today."
